Psalm 79 is a lament written by Asaph after Jerusalem had been destroyed and the temple defiled. At that time, the enemy had invaded God’s inheritance, the holy city lay in ruins, and the people had been taken into captivity. The whole nation of Israel was overwhelmed by deep shame, pain, and despair. They had once believed that, as God’s chosen people, they had the temple, worship, and God’s presence among them. Yet because of their rebellion and sin, God allowed them to come under His discipline. Their former glory was reduced to ruins, the place where they had once worshipped became desolate, the people were oppressed by their enemies, and everyone around them mocked them.

In the midst of this, the psalmist finally stopped relying on human strength and no longer tried to defend himself. Instead, he came humbly before God and cried out: “Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for Your name’s sake.”

Today, this passage also reflects the reality of our own spiritual condition. When our pastor was taken to a foreign land, we suddenly lost the support and spiritual covering we had relied upon. There were many spiritual paths we had never walked on our own, and many battles we had never truly faced. When difficult circumstances came, we fell again and again in our weakness. The whole church gradually became desolate, prayer lost its fervour, and people’s hearts grew cold and were taken captive by sin. In our weakness and darkness, we also experienced illness, pressure, broken relationships, and spiritual decline. Even our relationship with God gradually became distant. During that season, we seemed to be walking through a wilderness, with no direction and no strength. Our hearts were filled with sorrow and sighing; the suffering became unbearable, and there seemed to be no way forward.

Thanks be to the Lord for His grace—He did not turn His face away from our suffering! When we cried out, He poured out His grace once again and heard our prayers. He brought our pastor back from the foreign land. Following Christ’s example as a good shepherd, she willingly laid herself down and poured out her life for the sake of the flock, becoming like a grain of wheat that falls into the ground and dies so that many may receive life. Although she was completely exhausted and could barely remain standing, she still placed the needs of the flock above her own life. She prayed for us with tears and brought healing, deliverance, and comfort. Through her, God rekindled the fire of revival, awakened sleeping spirits, set cold hearts on fire again, and restored within us a holy fear of God.

Lord, thank You! Just as You once showed mercy to the people of Israel and heard their cries in the midst of desolation, You have shown the same grace to us today! You have not forgotten Your people, nor have You abandoned Your church. Although we were weak and fell, and went through desolation and darkness, You still reached out Your hand to save us because of Your faithfulness. Thank You for rekindling the fire of revival through the self-giving love of our pastor and giving us hope once again.

Lord, we firmly believe that You are the God who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. You will surely continue to show grace and mercy, bringing healing, restoration, and renewal to Your church. The fire of revival will never be put out, but will burn ever more strongly until Your glory once again fills Your temple!
