Psalm 80 is a prayer offered by Asaph during a time of national crisis. The psalmist witnessed the northern kingdom of Israel being conquered by Assyria and its people being taken into captivity, like a vine planted by God that had been broken down and trampled. In the midst of this suffering, he repeated the same plea three times (verses 3, 7, and 19): “O God, restore us; make Your face shine upon us, and we shall be saved.” This prayer echoes the priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24–26 and points to God’s presence, forgiveness, and salvation.

In the original Hebrew, “restore” and “revive” come from the same word, Shuv. True revival always begins with turning back to God in repentance. Again and again, God used circumstances, prophetic rebuke, warnings, and illumination to call the Israelites back to Him. Yet they covered their ears and refused to listen, continuing in stubbornness and rebellion. God then raised up enemies to attack and oppress them, and even allowed them to be taken captive to foreign nations and made slaves, where they suffered greatly. All of these were means God used to bring the people of Israel back to Himself.

( 5:12-14) In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit says through Paul: “For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said: ‘Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’” This shows that turning back means that when we are rebuked, we do not remain numb and unresponsive, ignore the correction and continue living by our own rules, or answer back, argue, and try to prove that we are good people who have done everything right, insisting that others have treated us unfairly. Instead, we respond. We are pierced in the heart and awakened, recognise that God is correcting us, and quickly humble ourselves and come before Him in broken repentance, asking Him to shine more light upon us.当我们真的因神的责备回转,神就要将祂的灵浇灌我们,将祂的话指示你们( 1:23)When we truly turn back in response to God’s rebuke, He will pour out His Spirit upon us and make His words known to us (Proverbs 1:23). (赛610The fruit of turning back is that we come alive: our eyes begin to see, our ears begin to hear, and God removes the dullness from our hearts. He heals and delivers us. Then His face shines upon us, He receives us with favour, and we are saved from sin. (Isaiah 6:10)

主啊,当我不满神配给我的丈夫,去看小说,短视频,用幻想麻醉自己时,当我讨好人,贪人的爱,得不着就怨恨苦毒,用恶言藐视弃绝丈夫和不饶恕他的家人时,当我自以为义地埋怨神,责怪人,心中争辩不服,放纵罪恶时,我正在背道的路上狂奔…Lord, when I was dissatisfied with the husband You had given me and turned to novels, short videos, and fantasies to numb myself; when I tried to please people and craved their love, then became resentful and bitter when I did not receive it; when I used cruel words to despise and reject my husband and refused to forgive his family; when I complained against God in self-righteousness, blamed others, argued and resisted in my heart, and indulged in sin, I was racing down the road of backsliding…结果是我与主隔绝,在黑暗中被仇敌欺压,没有喜乐,婚姻关系一团糟,服事没有能力,你兴起牧者责备我…As a result, I became separated from the Lord, oppressed by the enemy in darkness, and left without joy. My marriage became a complete mess, and my service had no power. You raised up a pastor to rebuke me… Yet when I was rebuked, instead of waking up and rising from the dead, I did the exact opposite. I became discouraged and depressed, accepted negative thoughts and feelings of rejection, saw myself as useless, and compared myself with others: Why can other people do things and serve, while everything I do is wrong? I have no ability. Then I sank further into destruction and death.

All of this was You calling me to return: “Return, faithless children; turn back, turn back. Leave your evil ways. Why should you die?” Everything that is rebuked is exposed by the light. Lord, Your love has never given up on me. You have always been waiting for me to return.

I am willing to follow the example of those who turned back as soon as You rebuked them. When David was confronted by the prophet, he immediately humbled himself and said, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Please forgive me. I was deceived by sin, my heart became hardened, I refused to deny myself, and I did not truly repent and turn to You. I sinned against You, deeply grieved Your heart, and hurt the people who loved me. You did not want me to die. You rescued me countless times, and You gave Your life to save me… How could I continue to scourge You and reject You? Lord, I want to turn back because of Your rebuke. May the Holy Spirit release the light of Your Word, so that in Your light my sins may be fully exposed. May I no longer hide or cover them, but humble myself in broken repentance and come to recognise more deeply my selfishness, self-love, unbelief, unfaithfulness, and unrighteousness. Let them be exposed before everyone. Let my old self lose every trace of dignity. Tear away my concern for reputation, pride, and self-respect, so that I may hate my flesh, forsake my own path, repent more deeply, and turn back to You. (51:13) Let me see Your smiling face and taste the joy of being set free from sin, so that songs of deliverance may surround me. May I also say, as David did, “Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, so that sinners will turn back to You.” (Psalm 51:13)
