【Psalm118:17I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the Lord has done.

Psalm 118 is a psalm filled with deliverance and thanksgiving. The psalmist had gone through great suffering, even reaching the point where he seemed about to die, but God did not hand him over to death. So he was not declaring that he had the power to control his own life, but declaring his faith in Gods deliverance in the midst of suffering: Gods deliverance not only sustained him through hardship, but also made his life a testimony.

The psalmist was surrounded by enemies and seemed to have been pushed to the very end; we may also go through times when pressure, difficulties, attacks from others, or circumstances beyond our control come at us from every direction. Suffering not only exposes the pressure of our circumstances, but also reveals the condition of our faith. We can easily see ourselves as victims and allow bitterness, self-pity, and despair to rob us of our trust in God. So we need to trust God and turn to Him, not allowing our feelings and emotions to take the place of Gods commands. We must not allow suffering to define God for us, nor allow our present circumstances to determine the outcome of our lives. The battle of faith is not about ignoring the danger, but about continuing to turn to God in the midst of it, believing that God is greater than every circumstance and that He is Lord over all.

“I will not die but live. This is not blind optimism, but hope grounded in Gods deliverance. Ultimately, our lives are not in the hands of our circumstances or our enemies, but in the hands of God.

The psalmist says, and will proclaim what the Lord has done.” God saves us not simply so that we may be comforted in our suffering, but because He has a purposeafter going through suffering and experiencing Gods deliverance, our lives can become a testimony, so that the tears, struggles, and grace we have experienced may all become opportunities to tell others of Gods faithfulness.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You, because my life is in Your hands.

When I go through suffering and weakness and cannot see a way forward, please guard my faith. Do not let me focus only on the circumstances in front of me, and do not allow fear and despair to become the final word over my life.

Help me to believe that You are still in control and that You are still at work. Since You have allowed me to remain alive, please do not let me live only for myself, but let me proclaim Your works through my life.

Let me remember Your deliverance in the past, continue to trust You today, and look forward to once again witnessing Your faithfulness in the future. Even while I am still going through suffering, I believe that You are still at work; no matter what I face today, You are still trustworthy. Please help me continue to hold on to faith as I wait and live out the calling You have entrusted to me, so that the life-giving hope of the gospel may lead more people to experience the hope of resurrection in Christ!

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
