Psalm 121 is a Song of Ascents, sung by the Israelites as they travelled to Jerusalem to worship. The pilgrimage was long and full of dangers, bringing great challenges to every traveler. As the psalmist lifts his eyes towards the mountains and thinks about the unknown road ahead and all that he will need, he asks a very real question: Where does my help come from?

Seeking help is a very real part of life. When we face uncertainty, pressure, and challenges that go beyond our own ability and push us to the limits of what we can bear, when we feel as though we can hardly keep going, we may also ask in our hearts: Where does my help really come from?

The psalmist does not keep his eyes fixed on the difficulties represented by the mountains rising before him or keep staring at his circumstances. Instead, he makes an act of faith: he lifts up his eyes, looks beyond the mountains, and turns his attention to the Lord who is above every mountain, who rules over all things, and who created heaven and earth. Then the psalmist gives a firm and faith-filled answer: My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

This reminds us to ask: when difficulties come, what are our eyes fixed on? If we keep looking at our circumstances, the difficulties seem greater; if we focus on the problem, the problem grows larger, and our fear becomes stronger. If we put our hope in people, or turn to things that promise to help us, once they change, our hearts can quickly become disappointed and shaken.

Only when we look to the God who created the universe and continues to sustain it can we find a firm foundation. His power is without limit, His faithfulness never changes, and He personally watches over, helps, protects, and guides those who belong to Him. God’s help does not always mean that He removes the difficulty straight away; sometimes He changes the circumstances, and sometimes He gives us strength in the middle of them so that we can keep going.

This also reminds me of the path the Lord Jesus walked. He did not go to the cross because the cross was easy, but in the midst of great suffering He continued to look to the Father and obey Him. He knew the road ahead, yet still chose to pray: “Not My will, but Yours be done.”

True faith is not believing that there will be no mountains tomorrow, but believing, while the mountain is still there, that my help comes from the Lord. Because of the redemption of Jesus Christ, we may therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are the Creator of heaven and earth and the source of all the help I need on the journey of my life.

Lord, I need Your help. I often turn my eyes towards myself and try to solve problems in my own strength; I also easily turn my eyes towards other people, and when I am disappointed, I blame people and my circumstances. Please forgive me.

Remind me again that when I am weak and afraid, I need to learn to lift up my eyes and look to You in the middle of difficulty. Do not let my eyes stay fixed only on the circumstances in front of me, but establish in my heart a firm faith and trust in You.

Help me remember: my help is not in myself, not in people, and not in my circumstances, but comes from the Lord alone, the Maker of heaven and earth.
