PPsalm 134 is the last of the Songs of Ascents. It is also a call to worship, inviting God’s servants to come to the sanctuary at night, continuing to lift their hands and praise the LORD, so that their praise and prayer to God do not stop because of the darkness of their circumstances.
The psalmist does not say, “Lift up your hands to God when everything is going well.” Instead, he says, “Lift up your hands in the sanctuary.” Lifting our hands is not simply an act of worship, but also a posture of surrender to God, looking to Him, and placing everything into His hands.
Often, when we come before God, the first thing on our minds is our own needs: “Lord, give me this.” “Lord, change that.” “Lord, sort out my problem.” There is nothing wrong with these prayers. But this verse first calls us to “praise the LORD.”
It is easy to praise God when life is going well, but choosing to praise Him even in the darkness is an act of faith. Even when the answer has not yet come, I can still lift my hands; even when my circumstances have not yet changed, I can still praise Him; because my worship is not based on “what God has already done for me”, but on “who God is”. He is “the Maker of heaven and earth”. His power is greater than our circumstances, His wisdom is greater than our plans, and His ways go far beyond what our eyes can see.
So worship is not about trying to gain God’s blessing, but about coming to the Source of blessing. At the end of the passage, Scripture gives us a beautiful blessing: “May the LORD bless you from Zion, he who is the Maker of heaven and earth.” Zion is God’s dwelling place, the place of His presence and grace. In the New Testament, we see even more clearly that all of God’s salvation and blessings are ultimately given to us in Christ.
Therefore, true blessing is not receiving everything we want, or having God change our circumstances, but having God Himself become our satisfaction.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, today I am willing to lift my hands to You and place my worries, plans, fears, and burdens into Your hands. For You are the God who created heaven and earth and rules over all things. Please forgive me for so often focusing only on my own difficulties and needs, while forgetting that You are the God who is worthy of all praise.
Please teach me not only to seek Your blessings, but to seek You Yourself. Whatever my circumstances may be, help me to choose to praise You and trust in You.
May Your presence be my greatest satisfaction. May Your Holy Spirit rule over my heart, so that my worship is not simply an outward form, but flows from a life that truly surrenders to You and trusts in You. May You bless me from Christ (Zion), so that my life may be a blessing to others.
In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
