Psalm 135 praises the one true and Most High God, who rules over all things. At that time, the nations surrounding Israel worshipped idols associated with different areas of life. But the psalmist declares that the LORD is not one god among many; He is the one true God who created and rules over all things. No realm lies beyond His authority, and no place is outside His rule.
We often hope to have everything under control, yet losing control is a normal part of life. This verse reminds us that not seeing God at work does not mean that God is not working. Even in the “depths” that we cannot reach, God is still carrying out His own purposes.
Faith is not demanding that God act according to my will, but continuing to believe, even when I do not understand and even when circumstances turn out contrary to what I expected: “LORD, You are still sovereign.” True worship is not only praising Him when He grants what we ask, but also trusting, when He does not, that His ways and His wisdom are higher than ours, and that His goodness and faithfulness reach to the heavens.
What we need to bring under control is the self within us that wants to control everything. Ability, plans, and money are not necessarily sinful, but when they replace God and become what we depend on, they become idols in our hearts.
When King Saul first saw the situation slipping out of control at Gilgal, fear caused him to overstep the authority given to him. He offered the sacrifice according to his own thinking, trying to make God change the circumstances according to his will. Even near the end of his life, when he inquired of the LORD and received no answer, he went to a medium because he wanted an answer. At the heart of idolatry is human desire: when people seek control and security apart from God, the enemy can take advantage of that desire.
God is not telling us to stop planning or working hard; He is calling us to return sovereignty to Him. We remain faithful, but we do not grasp at the outcome; we pray, but not according to our own will; we face the unknown, but we do not allow the unknown to make us doubt God’s faithfulness.
Prayer
“You do whatever pleases You, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.” Please forgive me for so often wanting to control my life through my own strength and for placing my plans, judgements, and expectations above Your sovereignty.
Please forgive me for grasping at things and turning to idols in order to get my own way. Father, may my life be surrendered to You. Whether I am facing mountains that I can see or the dark depths of the valley of the shadow of death, I will still believe: You remain sovereign.
Let this truth give me faith to overcome the fear of the unknown, to entrust myself completely into Your hands, and to find complete rest in Your presence—just as the Lord Jesus, on the cross, committed His spirit into the Father’s hands and rested in Him. Whether in life or in death, even if descending into the depths of the earth, everything is completely entrusted to You. Such complete trust and obedience reach the highest expression of faith. Therefore, “God exalted Him to the highest place,” so that “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,” and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Father, thank You that through the Lord Jesus’ perfect trust and obedience, You have accomplished this eternal salvation for us.
