Psalm 136 keeps repeating the declaration, “His love endures forever.” What is especially worth reflecting on is that the psalmist does not only recount God’s grace in creating the heavens and the earth, bringing His people out of Egypt, and leading them through the wilderness; 为什么连“审判、杀人”也能与“慈爱永远长存”紧紧连在一起?he also includes the severe judgement God brought upon Egypt. Why can even “judgement and killing” be so closely connected with “His love endures forever”? Because the God the psalmist knows is a God in whom justice and steadfast love are perfectly held together, and whose faithfulness never changes.
“To him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt” refers to the final plague of the ten plagues. Pharaoh repeatedly hardened his heart, rejected God’s command, and cruelly oppressed God’s people, until God’s judgement finally came upon Egypt. Pharaoh and Egypt represent a brutally oppressive and idolatrous power that trampled on human life and dignity (Egypt had ordered the Hebrew baby boys to be thrown into the Nile and killed). God’s act of “striking down” was not cruel slaughter, but a righteous judgement against extreme evil. If God simply ignored the brutality, oppression, and wickedness in this world, He would not be a God of justice and love, but a God who was indifferent and allowed evil to continue unchecked.
When righteous judgement comes upon the powers of darkness, God also reaches out His mighty hand to rescue the weak who are being oppressed and harmed. He prepared a way of salvation for the Israelites: they slaughtered the Passover lamb and put its blood on the doorframes and lintels of their homes. When the destroying angel came, he saw the blood and passed over that house—this is the Passover that the people of Israel have remembered from generation to generation.
In the New Testament, Paul declares, “For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” Christ is the true and perfect Lamb of God! The Israelites of old escaped physical death through the blood of the lamb; today, through the precious blood Christ shed on the cross, we are completely delivered from the judgement of sin and death. The deepest and greatest expression of God’s love towards us sinners is that He gave His own beloved, one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us on the cross and bear the righteous punishment that we deserved.
The cross shows us that God’s love is never just a comforting slogan, but a redeeming love for which Jesus Christ paid an immeasurably great price. God’s love does not excuse our sin or allow us to carry on living in the sins of our old life; instead, it powerfully rescues us from the bondage of sin, pride, self-righteousness, and the desire to control. 这就是神那超乎人类想象、公义与怜悯完美融合的——“永远长存的慈爱”!Today, whether the Egyptians and Israelites of old, or people from every nation who now fall short of the glory of God, all can receive the salvation of Jesus Christ through faith. This is God’s “love that endures forever”—a love beyond human imagination, where justice and mercy are perfectly united!
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus:
I thank You because Your love endures forever! Lord, You Yourself became my Passover Lamb, and through Your innocent life and precious blood, You bore the righteous judgement and punishment that should have fallen on me. Please forgive me for so often taking this costly grace for granted and allowing the cross to become a familiar phrase that no longer moves my heart. Please let me be deeply struck afresh today by the weight and holiness of Your precious blood, and help me to truly live in Your salvation!
Lord, please remove the numbness and hardness in my heart towards sin, so that I no longer make excuses for my pride, self-righteousness, bitterness, judgement, fear, or desire to control myself and everything around me. May the Holy Spirit shine His powerful light into my heart and make me face the hidden and unrecognised sins I am afraid to confront. Give me a heart that truly and completely repents and turns back to You. Lord, I know that without the covering and saving power of Your precious blood, according to my sinful nature, I am no different from the Egyptians who were struck down in those days!
Lord, whether the future brings deliverance or discipline, gain or loss, good times or hardship, please keep my heart close to You and never let me turn away from You! Help me to declare firmly in the middle of the storm: You are still my God, You are still exceedingly good, You still love me deeply, and whether I live or die, I belong to You alone!
Because Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God and our Passover Lamb, has shed His blood and given His life for me, I no longer live for myself, but for the Lord who died for me and was raised again!
In the name of the Lord Jesus, I pray. Amen.
