“Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.” These verses are a beautiful prayer of surrender. The psalmist knows that our hearts and eyes naturally turn toward something. If they are not continually turned toward God, they can easily be drawn toward things that promise satisfaction but cannot give life.
“Turn my heart toward Your statutes” is more than asking God to help us obey rules. It is asking Him to change our desires—“Lord, make me want what You want.” Selfish gain is not only about money. It can be wanting recognition, success, comfort, control, position, or simply getting our own way. But God’s Word redirects our hearts from living for ourselves to living for Him.
Then the psalmist prays, “Turn my eyes away from worthless things.” What our eyes continually look at can eventually capture our hearts. Some things may not even be sinful in themselves, but they become “worthless” when they consume our attention, feed wrong desires, or distract us from God’s purposes.
That is why these two prayers belong together: Turn my heart toward what is valuable; turn my eyes away from what is worthless. And then comes the beautiful promise: “Preserve my life according to Your word.” The world offers many things that appear to give us life, but true life is found in walking with God. When His Word shapes our desires, our attention, and our choices, our lives are aligned with what has eternal value.
Lord, turn my heart toward You and Your Word. Expose every selfish desire that competes with Your will. Turn my eyes away from worthless things that distract me from Your purpose. Holy Spirit, change not only what I do, but what I desire. Teach me to seek first Your Kingdom and righteousness, and to spend my life on what has eternal value. Preserve my life according to Your Word, that everything I do may bring glory to You. Amen.
