Psalm 119 is a psalm centered on the Word of God. As the psalmist reflects on God’s Word and experiences the realities of life, he sees an important truth: “all things have limits.” Human ability, knowledge, wealth, circumstances, and help all have boundaries, and even the things we think we can control eventually come to an end.

Yet we so often treat limited things as our source of security. When things are going well, we rely on our own ability; when difficulties come, we become trapped by the problems in front of us, thinking that our circumstances are everything and that today’s situation determines our future. We use our limited perspective to measure the infinite God. The more we focus on our circumstances, the smaller our hearts become; the more we focus on ourselves, the more anxious and fearful we become, even wondering why God does not act according to our will.

But the psalmist says: “Your commands are boundless.” God’s Word is boundless because His truth reaches far beyond our circumstances, experiences, and anything we can fully understand. When we recognize that all things are limited, God uses His Word to reveal to us the One who is infinite, faithful, wise, eternal, and sovereign. So we no longer allow our limited sight to define Him, but in Him we begin to see our circumstances, ourselves, and the future in a new way.

Yet we often use our own perspective, experience, and judgement to decide what is possible and what is impossible, even expecting God to act according to our understanding. True faith is not asking God to change our circumstances according to our will, but continuing to trust Him even when our circumstances have not yet changed; it is not obeying only after we can see a way forward, but continuing to follow Him even when we cannot see, because we know that He is trustworthy.

In Christ, we see even more clearly that God’s ways are far beyond human understanding: people thought the cross was failure, but through the cross God accomplished redemption; people thought death was the end, but through the resurrection God opened the way to eternal life. Therefore, what we can see is not the whole of God’s work; what looks like the end in front of us is not necessarily the end of what God is doing.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, please forgive me for continually trying to control the outcome because I am afraid and anxious about the future, and for forgetting that You are the infinite, faithful, and unchanging God.

Please help me, in this limited life, no longer to hold tightly to limited things, but to hold firmly to You and Your Word. When my circumstances disappoint me, help me still to trust You; when I cannot see a way forward, help me still to obey You.

Let me remember: all things come to an end, but Your Word is boundless. May You reveal Yourself, Your will, and Your works to me through Your Word, strengthen my faith, and help me stand firmly on unchanging truth in a changing world.

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
