The psalmist looks back on how God brought victory in the past—Israel did not take the land by their own strength, but through the name of the LORD. Yet now they are facing defeat and shame, and it seems as though God is hidden. Even when we have experienced victory through God before, we may still go through times of failure and confusion. This could be due to sin, spiritual attack, or a deeper purpose of God—just as Job was tested through accusation. This reminds us that when godly people suffer, it is sometimes because they belong to God. This is not a physical battle, but a spiritual one. In the midst of defeat and the taunts of the enemy, the psalmist declares with even greater confidence: we will fight through God and His name, and we will overcome.
When David faced Goliath, he declared, “I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty… the battle belongs to the LORD.” Paul also teaches that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers of this dark world. These kinds of enemies cannot be overcome by willpower or self-control, but only by being strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.
When Jesus came into the world, He understood that His true enemy was not the Roman Empire, but the evil one and his lies—the spiritual forces behind religion, human unbelief, and the power of sin and death. On the cross, in what looked like His defeat, Jesus achieved the greatest victory—He broke the power of the devil, who holds the power of death. His name is Jesus, because He saves His people from their sins.
The “name of God” represents who He is—His character, His promises, and His history of victory. When we declare “through Your name,” we are rising above our circumstances and, by faith, drawing on the authority that has overcome death and defeated the power of darkness.
Forgive me for treating people around me as my enemies, struggling in defeat without relying on Your strength, and not recognising that my real enemies are within me—doubt, fear, pride, and unbelief. Lord, renew me so that I can clearly see my enemies and declare that my Saviour is the King of kings and Lord of lords. Through Your name, I will deal with my pride and overcome my fear. Through Your name, I will rise again, crucify my old self with You, and allow the name of Jesus to reign in me. May my life become a testimony of victory through You.
Through the victorious name of Jesus, we tear down every barrier that divides the church, and break down human agendas, division, injustice, and unrighteousness. May Your church be set free from worldliness, fleshly desires, and pride. Through Your name, draw all people to Yourself, and reveal the authority, glory, and power of Your Kingdom.
