David, as the king of Israel, held great authority and gave commands. He lived in a magnificent palace, surrounded by servants who obeyed him. Yet in his later years, he came to a deep realisation: power, wealth, and resources are completely powerless in the face of death. No matter how great a king may be, he cannot stop the passing of life. David saw the truth clearly: life is in God’s hands, and so are strength and joy. Since our life on earth is like that of a traveller, and our eternal home is in God’s Kingdom, how foolish it is to be caught up in earthly gain and loss, to compete with others for power, or to offend God through unforgiveness. To receive God’s forgiveness and to walk closely with Him—this is true wisdom.

David describes human life as “a handbreadth,” as nothing before God. This prayer does not come from fear of death, but from a desire for wisdom. As Moses prayed, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psa 90:12). James also reminds us that life is like a mist. Without this awareness that life is short, we are easily deceived by sin and drift into meaningless living, doing whatever we like and wasting our time. True wisdom is recognising that we are sojourners, and instead of living for this world, we seek our eternal heavenly home.

In everyday life, sudden events—such as the fall of the tower of Siloam, or the unexpected passing of people around us—are warnings from God. The Lord Jesus said, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish!” No one knows whether tomorrow or an accident will come first. God gives us “today” not to waste, but as an opportunity to turn back to Him.

Spiritual people set us a powerful example: to live each day as if it were the last. At night before sleep, they pray deeply, receive God’s light, and repent; during the day, they give their all in serving the Lord. This sense of urgency helps a person, like David, to turn away from empty hopes and fix their hope fully on God, to seize today and hold on to God: “And now, O Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You!”

Lord, help me to know my end and the measure of my days; let me understand how short my life is. Give me true wisdom, so that I am no longer deceived by earthly power, gain, or wealth, and no longer live in vanity. Forgive me for past negligence, spiritual sleep, and the pride of thinking “there is still tomorrow.” Give me a watchful heart, so that each day I may truly repent before You and deal with sin. Grant me wisdom to redeem the time, because the days are evil. Let me not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

Lord, forgive my past negligence and spiritual sleep; out of fear, I have held on tightly to many things. I choose to repent, to lay down control, manipulation, unforgiveness, and self-defence, and to offer each day to You as if it were my last. Lead me to earnestly repent, deal with sin, and be used by You, pleasing to You. In my limited days, let me live in Your light and walk in holiness and godliness, until the day I see You face to face.
