David’s life was marked by many troubles and afflictions, yet it was also filled with the blessed experience of cries lifted up and prayers answered. At times, God’s response seemed delayed, requiring long and painful endurance in waiting, yet in the end the Lord reached out His hand of favour toward David. This deliverance was twofold: in outward circumstances, God lifted him out of the miry pit and the slimy clay and set his feet upon a rock, turning his anxiety and fear into joy and praise; and inwardly, God revealed within him the footsteps of Christ’s obedience.

This was the turning point of David’s life—he saw the coming Saviour. Christ, in His earthly life, also suffered distress and affliction, yet He humbled Himself in obedience. His ears were opened, His body was offered as a living sacrifice, and His heart was filled with the law of God, delighting to do His will. David understood that true hope does not lie in the immediate changing of circumstances, but in a life re-ordered through meeting with God. As every child of God discovers, when one encounters the Lord, there is a deep inward transformation. This shift of spiritual focus brings great hope and encouragement: salvation is not only deliverance from suffering, but also the transfer of lordship. Though in this world there is trouble, we are no longer orphans, for the Lord Jesus, who shed His blood, gave His life, and has overcome the world, is our Father.

Therefore, even when David was later pursued by sins “more numerous than the hairs of his head,” and was shaken with fear and trembling, he was still able to lift up his head and continue seeking God. For he understood that the joy of those who seek the Lord is not found in their own “success or failure,” but in the very nature of God dwelling within them. One who delights in salvation is one who esteems himself lightly; his only desire is that God would increase in his life, until He fills and overshadows every weakness and trouble.

O Lord, yes! Though my work and life are filled with many difficulties, and though the enemy’s attacks on the spiritual path are strong, I lift my heart to You. To “ascribe greatness to the Lord” is not a slogan, but my daily conviction from the heart: Your grace is greater than my troubles, and Your salvation is greater than my sins. Even those self-centred thoughts, self-reliance, self-trust, anxiety, fear, and that detestable, proud “old self” within me often overtake me. Yet have I not already tasted the great joy of victory over sin through trusting in You? When I seek Your salvation, do not the powers of sin collapse before Your glory?

O Lord, thank You that You are a God who delights to show mercy and save. I delight in Your salvation; I will rejoice and be glad in You. I long to dwell in You and to continue seeking You, to behold Your beauty. May I find rest in belonging to You. May the remainder of my life be summed up in one sentence, one melody: “Ascribe greatness to the Lord!” May I decrease continually, and may You increase within me, until I am fully hidden in Your holiness, and only Your glory is seen.
