Psalm 78 is a majestic historical psalm of instruction. Asaph the seer uses Israel’s history to teach the people of God to pass on His glorious deeds, His mighty power, and the wonders He has done to the next generation, and not to hide them from their children. The aim is to form in the next generation a spiritual habit of trusting in God, remembering His works, and keeping His commands. More importantly, they are not to be like their forefathers—“a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to Him” (v.8). If faith is not intentionally passed on within the family and the community of God’s people, the next generation will not naturally inherit reverence for God, but rather the sinful patterns of their ancestors.

The psalmist recounts the failures of Israel’s forefathers in the wilderness: they tested God, were greedy, and refused to believe. Though they witnessed miraculous provision, divine guidance, and even judgment, their hearts were not right before Him; they grew more and more distant from God through their greed and grumbling. Yet God did not destroy them. Instead, He repeatedly disciplined them and saved them.

Lord, we thank You for the light of this passage. It shows us that raising children to be those who trust in You is not only the responsibility of Sunday school teachers or ministers—though they play their part as teachers of Scripture. Rather, it is our own responsibility as parents and elders. We are called to bear witness in daily life to our own sinfulness, and to how God has disciplined us, forgiven us, and shown mercy to save us.

We are to diligently speak of God’s works, His character, and His grace in forgiving sin, so that our children may be shaped over time by what they hear and see. This long, faithful work cannot be replaced by others. We may speak of what God has done in the lives of others, but far more powerful is our own testimony—when we speak in the first person, the impact of faith is different.

Lord, help us to be honest, and to put to death the hypocrisy within us that pretends we have always been good. Help us to remember our failures, how You disciplined us, and how You led us to repentance, forgiveness, and blessing. Teach us to prepare ourselves continually, so that with gentleness, reverence, honesty, and humility, we may bear witness to the next generation.

In this way, when we teach those who come after us, our hearts will not be proud or self-righteous, but filled with compassion and gratitude for grace received. May You use our testimony to lead our children and their children into a lifelong path of repentance, faith, and blessing.
