Psalm 82 is set against the background of the complete collapse of Israel’s justice system. The judges and rulers who held authority twisted right and wrong, favoured the wicked, and allowed the orphans and widows at the bottom of society to suffer severe oppression. The passage describes God judging among the “gods” (Elohim, referring to earthly judges and rulers). What is most striking is that the Lord Jesus personally quoted this passage in John 10:34. He not only confirmed this Old Testament understanding, but also greatly expanded its meaning—under the New Covenant, believers are people who have received God’s Word and have been entrusted with authority! The Lord Jesus showed that those of us who truly receive the Word of God, and receive His words and commands, have been given an honourable identity carrying spiritual authority (“gods” with a lowercase “g”) and have been sent out as Christ’s ambassadors in the world. If we have been given this spiritual authority but remain unaware of the mission God has entrusted to us, and live no differently from unbelievers, we too will ultimately come under judgement and struggle to stand before the judgement seat of Christ.
The psalmist Asaph seems to have been lifted by the Holy Spirit into the heavenly Most Holy Place, where he saw the supreme Judge “standing” in the assembly of the gods to carry out judgement. In ancient courts, judges normally sat while hearing a case, but when God “stands”, it means that the investigation is over, His patience has reached its limit, and He is about to pronounce judgement Himself! This psalm, with its intense longing for justice, points towards an ultimate hope: Jesus Christ will personally return to reign, receive all nations and peoples as His inheritance, and restore the original justice and goodness of the earth. When the Lord Jesus became flesh and came into the world, the justice He carried out was not limited to social fairness, such as ensuring that the poor had housing, food, and practical support… It pointed even more deeply to ultimate spiritual redemption: preaching good news to the poor, proclaiming freedom for captives, recovery of sight for the blind, and setting the oppressed free (Luke 4:18). This is the true heart of justice, and it is fulfilled in Christ. Those who faithfully exercise the authority of God’s Word even unto death will reign with Him when the Lord returns.
Lord, this world that stands under judgment is not only outside of me, but within my own heart as well. You do not merely look at whether I read the Scriptures, pray, or serve in church each day; rather, I ask that by Your truth You would examine and illuminate my heart daily. Search how I treat the “poor, the fatherless, the widow, and those who are afflicted and needy” in my life. These are those without influence or connections, without wealth to offer or bribes to give—their only hope is the Lord. What is truly in my heart towards these vulnerable people? Have I wept, prayed, and cried out for them? As someone who has received Your Word under the New Covenant and should carry spiritual authority, have I genuinely valued and used this authority to stand in the gap for them? If the judges of this world have failed in their duty, then what about me, who has been entrusted with the holy Word of God?
Lord Jesus, You are our ultimate example of justice and mercy. A bruised reed You will not break, and a smouldering wick You will not put out. You said that the fast You have chosen is not a religious ritual, but to loose the chains of wickedness, set the oppressed free, share food with the hungry, bring the wandering poor into one’s home, clothe the naked, and not turn away from one’s own flesh and blood (Isaiah 58:6–7). Lord, when I read these words, please help me truly receive them as Your direct words to my soul.
May my heart, under Your judgement, be brought fully into alignment with the Lord’s mercy and justice! Then may Your great promises be completely fulfilled in me: may my light break forth like the morning, and my healing quickly appear; may Your righteousness go before me, and the glory of the Lord be my rear guard! 我就要以耶和华为乐,祢要使我乘驾地的高处,又以产业养育我!…(赛58:8-14) Then when I call, You will answer; when I cry out, You will say, “Here I am”! You will continually guide me, satisfy my soul in dry places, and strengthen my bones. You will make me like a well-watered garden and like a spring whose waters never run dry. Then I will delight myself in the Lord; You will cause me to ride on the heights of the earth and nourish me with my inheritance!… Lord, please arise and judge the world. Rule with Your justice and righteousness, and take all nations and peoples as Your inheritance!
