When Asaph, who had served for many years in the house of God as a worshipper, looked at what his eyes saw and reflected upon it, he could not understand it: the wicked prospered on the earth. They lived in ease, committing evil, oppressing others, and blaspheming God. Yet the people of God seemed to fall under their power, drinking the bitter cup and suffering continual oppression. Though he did not understand, he came honestly before God and sought Him. He poured out the questions of his heart before the Lord.
Then God revealed the truth to him and lifted his perspective. When he began to see things with God’s eternal view, everything became clear. The life of man on earth is so brief—like a moment in time under God’s eternal scale. Eternity is never far from each person; this present life and the life to come may be separated only by a breath. The wicked are brought to destruction and swept away in terror; they vanish like a dream in the night and are forgotten. But the righteous are received into glory forever.
Even suffering, discipline, and correction are all part of God’s loving guidance, training His people to become mature and complete, so that they may inherit their portion in the house of God in eternity. How brief are the days of man! In these fleeting years, how often God has used hardship to shape His people; how often He has spoken through circumstances; how often He has used the rebuke and encouragement of others; and how often He has warned and reminded through dreams in the night. Is all this not for the purpose that we may dwell with Him—the fountain of love—and receive our eternal reward?
When Asaph saw the goodness of God’s purposes, he understood that the life of God’s people on earth is often like a wilderness—dry and weary. Many of the saints live carefully before God, fearing Him, resisting temptation, and striving for holiness in both conduct and heart. Does God not see? Does He not know? Will not the Judge of all the earth do right? He will never treat the guilty as innocent, but will repay each person according to their heart and their deeds.
(21-22节)Lord, forgive us that we often see only what is before our eyes and so misunderstand You, thinking we know more than we do. Like the psalmist’s repentance: “When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was like a brute beast before You.”
Lord, I choose to humble myself and trust in Your righteousness and Your love forever. Though heaven and earth pass away, Your Word will never pass away.
Thank You that You use even the wicked to test us, to reveal what we truly desire and which path we choose. Your Word has already made it clear: “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”In the end, Asaph saw the final answer clearly: “Whom have I in heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
