Psalm 55 was written during one of the darkest and most painful moments in Davids life: his son Absalom conspired to rebel against him, and Ahithophel, his most trusted companion and counsellor, turned against him in betrayal. David could endure the attacks of enemies, but the treachery of his own son and beloved friend shattered his soul and left him overwhelmed with fear and confusion. Barefoot and with his head covered in mourning, he fled into the wilderness, longing for wings like a dove so that he might fly away and escape from such unbearable anguish.

In a situation where both his emotions and dignity had been torn apart, David could do nothing except cry out to God. He said, As for me, I call to God. He turned his sorrow into prayer, crying out earnestly evening, morning and noon. In the midst of his groaning day and night, he repented of his sin and cast his burden upon the LORD. God also confirmed through circumstances that He had heard David’s prayers, providing what he and his followers needed through others, comforting and strengthening their hearts, until they were made strong again.

Though this painful trial began because of Davids own sin, it became a furnace that refined him. What stands out most in this passage is that even in fear, weakness and apparent defeat, David continued steadfastly in prayer before God. Davids faith testified to his fear of the LORD. The righteous will live by faith. Trusting in the righteousness and unfailing love of God, David was restored as though raised from the dead. Though he had sinned, by faith he was once again justified before God, and in the end the LORD caused his enemies to fall and established his throne once more.

David, though living under the Old Testament law, became a forerunner who lived out the hidden truth of Gods grace a grace greater than the law itself: that a man is justified by faith, and that the righteous shall live by faith. David’s example shows that whenever a man comes before God with a humble and contrite heart, seeking Him and casting his burden upon the LORD, the LORD will sustain him; He will never let the righteous fall.

Lord, I praise You and thank You that through todays passage You show us that sometimes the fear, pain and wounds we suffer, like Davids, may be the result of our own sin. Yet even so, we may still pour out our complaint before God as David did, continuing steadfastly in prayer, repenting of our sin, and allowing our hearts to be changed where they do not align with Your will. Then we too shall experience Your comfort, Your provision, and the strength that comes from You.

My God does not change yesterday, today and forever. God does not look first at the greatness of our failures, but whether we will turn back to Him with a humble and repentant heart. By faith we believe that God did not come to condemn us, but to save us from our sins. Therefore we may continually rejoice before Him and declare: (诗32:7)“You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.” (Psalms 32:7)
