People often place their trust in wealth, status, and reputation, yet none of these can redeem a person’s life, and nothing can be taken beyond the grave. Jesus spoke about the “rich fool” who stored up possessions for himself and believed he could now relax and enjoy life. But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared?” This is exactly what it means for someone to live “in honour without understanding”—he had wealth, but never considered the condition or destiny of his soul.
Human beings were created in the image of God and given the responsibility of stewarding His creation. Originally, humanity carried God-given honour and glory. But because all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, people now mistake money, influence, fame, and success for true honour. If someone becomes consumed by this earthly and false “honour,” without awakening to the meaning of life or preparing for eternity, living only for this present world, then he is no different from “the beasts that perish.” The end is death, followed by judgment. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world but lose his own soul? This “understanding” is not simply intellectual knowledge, but a spiritual awakening through God’s light that leads a person to turn back to Him in repentance.
大卫一生经历荣耀与尊贵,却对神说:‘愿神把世上的好处都给别人,至于他,得着神尊贵的形象就心满意足了’…David experienced honour and glory throughout his life, yet he said before God that others could have the blessings of this world, but for him, seeing God’s glorious likeness was enough. Paul also fought the good fight, counting everything else as rubbish compared with knowing Christ. Near the end of his life, he knew that a crown of righteousness was waiting for him. Many disciples of Jesus, missionaries, and martyrs, awakened by God, no longer lived for themselves, but for God’s Kingdom and eternal reward, living lives marked by eternal significance.
Lord, thank You for laying aside the glory of heaven and taking the form of a servant to come among us. You gave Your life so that we could receive eternal life. You emptied Yourself, yet gave us the inheritance of the Kingdom. You became poor so that we might become rich. You carried shame so that we might receive the honour of being citizens of heaven. Lord Jesus, You revealed the fullness and glory of God’s nature to us, showing that holiness, loving enemies, forgiveness, mercy, righteousness, and a heavenly character are what true honour really is. Lord, You are worthy of all glory, praise, and honour. You are worthy of our whole lives in worship and service.
Lord, forgive me for often wandering like a lost sheep, deceived by the world’s prosperity, vanity, and false honour, and for losing my first love for You. Awaken my heart again, so that I may truly know that I am a child of God and a citizen of heaven—this identity is my true honour. Help me to be about my Father’s business, storing up treasure in heaven, becoming a faithful steward, and offering back to You what You have first given to me. Let me no longer live for myself, but for the Lord, living a life worthy of this heavenly calling.
Lord, I also pray for Your church. Send holy fire and revival fire among us, so that Your church may no longer remain asleep. Bring spiritual awakening, so that Your church will not become merely a successful earthly organisation in the eyes of the world—wealthy, influential, and admired—but a place where sinners repent, where healing and freedom are found, where captives are set free, prisoners released, and the broken-hearted restored. May all nations see Your power and glory, turn to You, worship You, and honour You.
