In this psalm, Asaph saw that the Lord was coming to judge His people. The people of God had entered into covenant with Him through sacrifices. According to the ordinances of the Law, they offered sacrifices continually to God. Yet as life became prosperous and comfortable, they gradually, without realising it, forgot their true condition and began to think they were doing well. But God declares that He has no need of the flesh of bulls or goats upon the altar, for all things already belong to Him.As David, the man who knew God, also said: Psalm 51:16–17“You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” What God desires is a sacrifice that recognises our own lack before Him—a heart that, seeing its true condition, is grieved over sin and turns in genuine repentance, with sincere thanksgiving for His salvation.

因为听命胜于献祭”…Lord, please shine Your light upon me. In my daily life, am I like the first group You pointed out—often going to church, serving, and offering sacrifices, yet unwilling to truly listen to Your Word? You have said: “My people, hear my teaching; Israel, listen to me. I am God, your God” (Psalm 50:7). For “to obey is better than sacrifice”…

Or am I more like the second group—indulging myself and following my own desires, speaking about God to others in religious language, yet living in my own environment as if I do not believe in God? Even worse, resisting Your light and discipline—stealing, committing sexual immorality, speaking evil words and deceitfully, and slandering the brothers and sisters. You call such a person wicked, and You strongly rebuke them. Or perhaps both kinds of sin are found in me, so that unknowingly I become like what Jesus called “whitewashed tombs”—beautiful on the outside, but inside full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. And in my heart I even resist those who correct and rebuke me, like the Pharisees who rejected truth.

But thank You, Lord, for Your great mercy and abundant compassion. Through Your Word, You show us the right path and lead us into the way of righteousness so that we may truly repent. Although God warns the wicked, He is rich in mercy and compassion. He does not delight in the death of the wicked, but desires that the wicked would see their own sinfulness, receive correction with thanksgiving, humble themselves before Him, repent, and walk in His ways—and so receive His salvation.

Lord, I thank You for Your love, for Your humility and patience, and for using rebuke and discipline to increase reverence in our hearts. Thank You for allowing the cross in our lives to break us and cause us to grow. Thank You for Your Word—line upon line, here a little, there a little—leading us always toward repentance and the right path. Thank You for giving us the Holy Spirit, and the opportunity to be freed from the old form of ritual religion, to serve You truly: to see our own sinfulness, to offer ourselves wholly—heart, soul, and life—with a broken and contrite spirit, turning away from all works of the flesh, and walking in humility, purity, and love. May our souls receive Your salvation, truly give thanks, and glorify You.
