When the wicked use their tongues for evil and trust in their own strength, David says, “But as for me.” This is not merely a choice of path or position; it is a clear knowing, in the midst of confusion and injustice, that one’s life belongs to God. Faith has never been about relying on power or currying favor with the influential; nor is it about following the crowd and gaining advantage through scheming and deceit. Rather, even in a place of weakness under pressure and trial, it is a steadfast choice to trust in God.
The testimonies of many spiritual men and women are a living expression of this verse. They do not seek their own good, but speak up for righteousness. They do not know what kind of test lies ahead—misunderstanding, loss, or even persecution. Yet they do not shrink back; instead, they live out lives of loving God and loving others. Even in times of turmoil, they entrust life and death to Him, bearing witness through their actions to God’s love and truth. Their strength does not come from stable circumstances, but from that inward trust that endures “for ever and ever.” Such a life carries light, strength, and a drawing power that stirs others to follow the same God.
The life of a “green olive tree” is a deeply rooted life. The olive tree grows slowly, yet it is exceedingly long-lived. Even in dry, rocky places it can bear abundant fruit, and its leaves remain green. It does not wither because of temporary drought, for its roots go down deep to hidden sources of water.
David says that he is like “a green olive tree in the house of God.” This means his life is rooted in the holiness and presence of God’s dwelling. For one who truly trusts in God, it is not that there are no storms, but that the roots of life are planted in the source of God’s unfailing love. He may weep, but he will not despair; he may be struck down, but not destroyed. For his strength does not come from circumstances, but from the love of God. This “green” is a life continually renewed—a life that, even in suffering, still yields oil and remains a blessing to others.
When people see such a life, they will know that God is real and that His love can be trusted. This has also become my calling—not to live a safe and comfortable faith, but a real, rooted life that is continually nourished and renewed by God. Deep within me rises a greater response: Lord, I do not only want to “believe”; I desire to “become” that green olive tree, rooted in your house—choosing you and trusting you in the realities of each day, allowing my life to be refined in trials and enlarged through suffering.
Lord, you see the longing within me, and you also see my weakness. Lead me into deeper trust—not merely a confession of the lips, but a life that is truly rooted. Guide me on this path that is not easy, yet true. Uphold me in every trial, that I may not shrink back or compromise. Let my life bear the mark of your presence in suffering, and shine with light in the darkness. Lord, make me that green olive tree, trusting in your unfailing love for ever and ever—unshaken, unwithering, until I see your face.
