Psalm 72 appears, on the surface, to be David’s prayer for Solomon as he became king. David longs for the new king to judge with righteousness and defend the cause of the poor. Yet the scale of this psalm—“while the sun endures and the moon remains, throughout all generations,” “his dominion shall be from sea to sea,” and “all nations shall call him blessed”—goes far beyond the historical kingdom of Solomon. Through David, the Holy Spirit was prophetically pointing to the true King of Peace, the Son of David, Jesus Christ. Only Christ’s return and reign can bring about the endless righteousness, holiness, and worldwide submission described in this psalm.
“The fear of the Lord is to hate evil” (Proverbs 8:13). Genuine reverence for God will always produce a hatred of sin and a desire to turn away from it. When people continually return to sin and repeatedly compromise, the issue is not simply weak willpower. At its root is a lack of the fear of God. Instead of treating God as God, they place themselves on the throne. The result is inevitably pain and sorrow. (耶 2:19)As Scripture says: “Your own wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realise how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the Lord your God and have no fear of Me” (Jeremiah 2:19).
When Jesus came to earth, He delighted in the fear of the Lord. He perfectly displayed God’s righteousness, mercy, and hatred of evil. At the cross, He revealed both perfect justice and limitless love. He rescued those crushed by sin and broke the power of the enemy who oppressed them.
Lord, forgive me. Time and again I find myself returning to the same sins and compromises. It is not that I do not know Your Word; rather, deep within me there remains a lack of true reverence for You. I have mistaken Your patience for permission. I have longed for human approval, earthly rewards, and personal recognition. I have exalted myself. At times I have even failed in my responsibility as a parent, neglecting to teach the next generation to fear God and turn away from greed.
As I look honestly at my condition, I see a barren landscape. I am like a captive living in a dry land, lacking joy, wisdom, and spiritual authority. Yet I thank You that You have not given up on me. Through the correction of pastors and fellow workers, and through the circumstances You have allowed into my life, You continue to speak. You are waiting for me to truly wake up and genuinely repent. You will not simply overlook sin, and that itself is an expression of Your righteous love.
“But with You there is forgiveness, so that You may be feared” (Psalm 130:4). Lord, You are worthy of reverence from generation to generation. Your mercy and compassion belong to those who fear You. I do not want to continue living a life where my head knows the truth but my life remains disconnected from it. If I refuse to repent now, how will I stand before You on the day of judgment? I do not want to be like Eli, who honoured his sons more than he honoured God and treated God’s word lightly, only to bring devastating judgment upon his household.
No, Lord. Today I choose to call upon You. I choose to hate sin, forsake it, and wage war against every sinful desire and evil thought within me. I declare that my old self has been crucified with Christ. I choose to die to sin and live unto God. Holy Spirit, please work within me. Teach me to practise the fear of the Lord in the ordinary details of everyday life. Bring me fully alive again. Help me to live before Your face and to see, here in the land of the living, the greatness of Your forgiveness and the mighty power by which You raise the dead.
