Psalm 89 is a maskil (instructional poem) written by Ethan the Ezrahite. Though the psalmist found himself in the darkest moment of Israel's history—when David's throne seemed utterly lost—he still declared firmly in faith: "Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound (who know how to shout to You)!" Here, "to know" (yada in biblical Hebrew) refers to a profound personal recognition and intimate communion born of experiencing God. "The joyful sound/shout" (teruah) is not a frenzy of fleeting emotions, but a battle song of faith raised to God amidst dark storms, because the spirit has recognized and aligned with God's victorious decrees.

"The light of Your countenance" represents God's holy, smiling favor and loving-kindness toward His children; "to walk" refers to our most authentic, daily life and conduct. This reveals to us a grand law of the Kingdom of God: a truly blessed life does not depend on the ups and downs of external circumstances or the prosperity of our hands, but on the soul deeply knowing God's character and deeds through daily fellowship in the secret place, thereby relocating one’s entire life into the gaze of God's face. No matter how ordinary, or even rugged and difficult the road beneath our feet may be, as long as it is illuminated by the sunlight of His smile, every step is guided by the presence of His truth. Our lives will never lose direction; our dark nights are lit by the fire of God's pillar, and our weary minds and bodies will renew their strength, mounting up with wings like eagles.

Lord, forgive me for only shouting to You when things go my way and when I receive what I desire, failing to be like the prophet Habakkuk: "Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines; though the labor of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food; though the flock may be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls—yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation." (Habakkuk 3:17-18). Faith is believing before seeing; it is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Even when the circumstances were still pitch-black, just like Paul and Silas chained in the inner prison, they had already begun to praise and shout to You... and then they experienced the chains falling off and witnessed the victory of God.

Through Paul, Silas, and countless spiritual giants before us, I see how truly blessed they were to still raise a joyful shout to You in the dark of night despite experiencing endless suffering and trials. They walked constantly in the light of Your face. Jesus Christ declared, "In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world... I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." (John 8:12).

Lord, thank You for granting us all kinds of tribulations and fiery trials, for they are meant to make us blessed, just like You—who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising its shame, and raised a shout to You in the midst of manifold trials... May the Holy Spirit lead us to rise and practice: always rejoicing, praying without ceasing, and in everything giving thanks. May we all follow You and receive the blessing of You, our true High Priest: "The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you." (Numbers 6:25).
