This is the greatest spiritual climax of the whole psalm, and even of the whole Old Testament. In Hebrew, “meeting together” carries the sense of “kissing each other”. Yet God is righteous and must judge sin (truth/righteousness); at the same time, God is full of love and longs to save people (steadfast love/peace). From a human point of view, these two seem to be an impossible contradiction and conflict, unable to be fulfilled at the same time—if God upholds righteousness, sinners must die; if God shows mercy, righteousness seems to be compromised.

So where did these two “meet and kiss”? Only on the cross of Jesus Christ two thousand years later! On the cross, God’s judgement against sin reached the fullest expression of righteousness, while God’s forgiveness towards sinners also reached the fullest expression of steadfast love. In Christ, righteousness and grace are no longer in conflict, but kiss each other in deep love. Under the revelation of the Holy Spirit, the psalmist had already pointed ahead to the salvation God would accomplish in the future. As John 1:17 confirms: “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”

In this fallen world, people always try to build heaven on earth through their own efforts. The result is that they either trample on truth in the name of love, or compromise righteousness in the name of peace. The cross is an astonishing meeting within the very character of God. There, God’s righteousness, which will by no means clear the guilty, and God’s steadfast love, by which He loved the world and even gave His only Son, came together in perfect and breathtaking harmony. Through the blood Jesus shed on the cross, the barrier between God and humanity was broken down, peace was made (Colossians 1:20), and we who have been justified by faith have peace with God through Him (Romans 5:1).

Lord, Your steadfast love and righteousness are kept for those who fear You. Our lives are so brief; we cannot endure seventy years of captivity like the Israelites. May Your steadfast love, truth, righteousness, and peace be rekindled in my life, so that I may walk firmly in Your footsteps. Help me to fight to remove the mixtures of my old self: in relationships, do not let me live before people, maintaining only a surface-level “peace” because I fear conflict, and thereby tolerate and compromise with sin; nor let me use “righteousness” as a banner to judge others harshly by the law, while losing love within. Please give me spiritual conviction, so that I will not be swayed by people’s words, but will always be led by the Holy Spirit towards the substance of truth—Jesus Christ.

Lord, I also pray for Your church. Some teaching today magnifies Your love without limit, while completely ignoring Your righteousness and holiness. It presents grace as cheap forgiveness that requires no change of life, rather than as the power that can transform a person completely. This selective emphasis creates a distorted theology. Although it satisfies people with itching ears, it departs completely from the fullness of who You are—the holy and righteous God who hates sin, yet is full of mercy and steadfast love. Please turn people’s hearts back to You, so that in their lives they may truly live out the harmony in which steadfast love and truth meet, and righteousness and peace kiss each other. May Your glory be revealed on earth, and may the church truly become a glorious dwelling place on earth as it is in heaven.
