Psalm 70 is one of the shortest and most urgent cries for help in the entire Book of Psalms. It is David’s emergency call to God when his life was in grave danger. Psalm 70, consisting of only five verses, is almost identical to Psalm 40:13–17. It seems that, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, David may have taken the most essential and urgent portion of his plea from Psalm 40 and set it apart as a separate psalm. In doing so, God has provided His people with a prayer that can be lifted up immediately in times of sudden trouble, fierce spiritual conflict, or even when one can scarcely catch his breath.

Clearly, this prayer arose out of David’s real experiences in repeated times of distress. Because he continually feared the Lord, sought Him, and walked in fellowship with Him, God was swift to help him in his many crises, strengthening him inwardly and renewing his faith. In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit likewise speaks through Paul: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13). The anointing David received through seeking God filled him with gladness and rejoicing. The joy that came from the Lord became his strength in affliction, and through steadfast faith he beheld the hope of deliverance.

In the circumstances that God had specifically appointed for him, David did not yield to the downward pull of unbelief or to the powers of darkness. Rather, he cried out to God in faith and sought His face, and the Lord granted him even greater faith. His inner man was saved and strengthened. Having been tested many times, he became one who inherited the promises through faith.

Lord, we thank You for the adversities You allow in our lives. Through them You train us not to give up, become discouraged, or abandon ourselves to despair, but to press on toward You against the current. You delight when we willingly wage war against the law of sin within our flesh. (4:29) This is the first step in dying to sin, living unto God, and overcoming both our circumstances and ourselves. As we actively seek You with both heart and action, loving You and seeking You with all our heart and soul, we shall find You (Deuteronomy 4:29). 主啊,感谢你,让大卫给我做榜样,愿大卫的心成为我的心,真实看见、谦卑承认,自己也实在是灵里困苦穷乏的人,求你搭救我,求你速速搭救我…Lord, I thank You for giving David as an example to me. May David’s heart become my heart. Grant that I may truly see and humbly confess that I also am poor and needy in spirit. Deliver me, O Lord; hasten to help me. (提前4:16) Save me from sin and from every evil power that pursues me. As I seek You and put my trust in You, grant me strength to overcome sin and to rejoice in You. For by persevering in these things, we not only save ourselves, but also those who see and hear our testimony (1 Timothy 4:16). Amen.
